About Arati Devasher
Hi! I'm Arati Devasher. I make unique pieces of wearable art.
Who am I?
I am a freelance book designer and artist (www.aratidevasher.com) living and working in London, UK. Painting silk is my 'side-gig' and I love it.
How did I start painting textiles?
I discovered silk painting In 2013 while looking for a creative outlet to soothe my soul. I had been through a very difficult period in 2012, when I was unexpectedly diagnosed with a chronic illness and underwent aggressive treatment for 9 months. It's a lifelong ailment and the peaceful process of painting textiles resulting in beautiful and useful objects is very cathartic.
Why do I make accessories?
I believe that accessories – scarves, jewellery and ties among them – are the most versatile, long-lasting items in one's entire wardrobe. You can reinvent your whole look by adding just one statement piece. They will soon become favourites you want to wear every day; I know I do. I hope you enjoy wearing my accessories as much as I love making them.
Who makes my products?
Every single piece is individually hand painted by me, using hot wax, gutta and dye on pure white silk. I'm exploring other natural fabrics and will add them to my shop soon. The only exception is the fabric for my Luxury Tie collection, which I paint and send to a delightful workshop in Kent to sew into exquisite ties.
Where do I get my inspiration?
I've combined my Indian heritage with a modern aesthetic fuelled by my training as a graphic designer; my scarves, ties and jewellery feature repetitive patterns inspired by nature, with vibrant colours bringing them to life. I try to bring the practical aspect in as well, modelling my designs on how I would wear them myself.
What do I do about sustainability?
I do my best to make sure that I remain eco-friendly and sustainably sourced. My silk is currently sourced via British and EU suppliers from India (my country of origin) and China (which is still the best producer of top quality silk). All my dyes, wax, packaging, tools, office supplies and materials are eco-friendly and responsibly sourced; electricity and water use is kept to a minimum.
Do I pay attention to quality as well as design?
All my silks – scarves, kerchiefs, ties and jewellery – are colour-fast 100% silk and can be hand-washed. No dry-cleaning required! Hand-sewn hems are a feature of the scarves and pocket squares, adding a touch of luxury. Everything is beautifully packaged, ready to gift.

Arrived really quickly in beautiful wrapping, as lovely as the pictures on the website!
Very pleased with my silk scarf. It looked exactly like the photo online. Despatch was efficient and I was notified . A very good service all round.
Beautiful ribbon. I can’t wait to use it at my wedding! Thank you.
This is a simply beautiful tie. I also comes beautifully packaged. An exquisite gift.
I liked the item at first sight! It is as beautiful as I saw on the picture but there’s one thing; the silk cloth covering the beads was not painted in black but in black to yellow gradation, which made this necklace more special :)
What a lovely shop! Difficult to choose just one scarf. Beautifully gift wrapped too.
An exquisitely made and painted scarf that carries an aura of specialness, it arrived promptly and was beautifully packaged to make it a perfect gift.
